Animal Shelters
There's a place in your community where the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, and the abandoned are comforted. It's your local animal shelter, where care is provided for your area's homeless animals.
Shelters also offer many other services for pets and their owners—and even for people without pets. To do all this, they rely on the support of people like you. Whether you're here to simply find your local shelter or you have concerns about animal issues in your community, we can help. Follow the links below to get all the information and resources you need.

Where to go to Adopt A Cat
Animal shelters are good places to go to adopt a cat. You can find a wonderful kitten or lovable adult cat companion and feel good knowing you saved her life. Shelters require a small fee, references and answers to questions about your home and life style. They will require you to neuter or spay your pet (See: Cat Care: A Dream Kitten is Born/Spaying and Neutering) if that has not already been done. This agreement has the intention of reducing the population of homeless cats.
Kittens or adult cats for adoption can also be found through private party listings in the newspaper, on bulletin boards at local pet stores or at schools. These animals are generally well-cared for and are in people's homes. If you are calling a newspaper ad, make sure that the kitten is at least 8 weeks old. Kittens taken from their mothers younger than that often suffer serious psychological or health problems. Ideally, a kitten should stay with its mother until at least 12 weeks old. If the mother cat was accidentally mated, ask the person offering the kittens if she has since been spayed. An affirmative answer will give an indication that these are responsible people who care for the mother-- and for her kittens.
Although persons looking for a pedigreed kitten should never buy one at a pet store, pet supply stores that work with local rescue organizations and shelters to help place cat "orphans" are to be commended. These pet supply stores will often advertise "pet adoption days" at their facilities.
Kitten or Cat?
Kittens are adorable, but they have disadvantages. They need more care, training and supervision. They go through "wild phases", like the "terrible sixes" at six months when they go tearing through the house with un-relentless energy. They need vaccinations, checkups and neutering or spaying. Their future looks and personality is a big "question mark".
With an adult cat, you know what you are getting. Their personalities are completely developed and it is likely they are already altered. Adult cats usually have no difficulty adapting to new homes and bonding with their owners. They are often so grateful to have a secure home!

CAT Adoption Team
In May 1998, Evan Kalik opened a safe haven for unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens called the Cat Adoption Team (CAT).
On an average day, the Pacific Northwest’s largest non-profit, no-kill cat shelter and hospital cares over 350 cats of all breeds and personalities. During the summer months, this number can increase to up to 600 cats and kittens. Nearly 250 cats are housed at the shelter, 50-55 at various outreach sites throughout Portland, and 50 - 300 (depending on kitten season) in our foster care program. CAT works closely with other shelters, animal control agencies, veterinary offices and other rescue organizations to rehabilitate many cats or kittens whose medical needs may otherwise lead to euthanasia. CAT cares for our furry friends while they wait to be placed in safe, loving, indoor-only homes.

Cat Haven Inc. - Cat Haven Inc. is a non-profit organization located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was established in 1999 to rescue and place cats and kittens in loving homes. In just a few years, we have rescued and found homes for over 3,500 cats. We make it possible for area residents to find the perfect cat or kitten by hosting adoption events every Saturday and Sunday in the Baton Rouge area. All cats adopted through Cat Haven have been spayed or neutered, tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus, and have received age appropriate basic vaccinations.
In addition to finding good homes for cats and kittens, Cat Haven has an active program to reduce the number of stray feral cats in our community. We have trapped, neutered and released almost 2000 cats. The Feral Program reduces the potential for more stray cats and saves hundreds of kittens from the cycle of wild life outdoors by transferring them to Cat Haven's adoption program.

Bide-A-Wee Animal Refuge Center Adoptions
Since 1903, Bide-A-Wee has been dedicated to a simple mission: to shelter and care for homeless cats and dogs until they can be adopted. Bide-A-Wee -- the name comes from a Scottish phrase for "stay a while" -- is one of the nation's oldest and most respected humane organizations.
Over the years, Bide-A-Wee has placed more than one million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Our dedicated staff takes pride in evaluating the personalities of pets and helping to make the best possible matches with people.
All pets in Bide-A-Wee's care are housed in clean, climate-controlled, indoor facilities. They eat a high-quality diet, and they receive loving attention, daily play, and exercise from caring staff and volunteers.
The three Bide-A-Wee adoption centers in Manhattan, Wantagh and Westhampton are all no-kill sanctuaries. There is typically a waiting list for new pets to be admitted to the adoption centers, and people are called as soon as space becomes available.
If you need to place your pet, or you know someone whose pet is facing homelessness or abandonment, please call to make an admissions appointment. Or send email to info@bideawee.org
